Self-portraits: Live Impressions (Soliton), the collaborative album by Paweł Biliński and Krzysztof Maciejowski, has received a highly acclaimed review on the prestigious Era Jazzu platform in TOP albums category. What makes this recognition particularly significant is the author of the review: Dionizy Piątkowski, one of Poland’s most respected jazz critics, journalists, and cultural promoters, whose voice has shaped the perception of jazz and improvised music for generations.

In his review, Piątkowski emphasizes the duo’s artistic courage and their exceptional ability to create a compelling musical narrative entirely through spontaneous interaction. He points to the album’s unique character, transcending conventional genre boundaries and drawing from jazz, contemporary classical music, cinematic expression, and free improvisation. Rather than following established formulas, Self-portraits is presented as an original artistic statement—an intimate conversation between two musicians listening deeply to one another and allowing the music to unfold organically.

The review also highlights the authenticity of the recording process itself. Captured live without predetermined structures, the album documents a rare creative encounter between Paweł Biliński’s piano and Krzysztof Maciejowski’s five-string electric violin. According to Piątkowski, the strength of the project lies in its honesty, emotional depth, and the trust that enables both artists to transform spontaneous ideas into a coherent and evocative musical journey.

Being featured so prominently on Era Jazzu and receiving such enthusiastic praise from Dionizy Piątkowski represents a major distinction for both artists. Within the Polish jazz community, Piątkowski’s recommendations carry exceptional weight, reflecting decades of engagement with the most important developments in the genre. His recognition of Self-portraits serves not only as a celebration of the album itself but also as confirmation of its place among the most compelling contemporary improvised music projects emerging today.

Biliński/Maciejowski: Self-portraits: live impressions

New EP is coming. Biliński/Maciejowski: “Self-portraits: live impressions” official announcement

I’m proud to announce new EP coming up on December 06, 2025. Here is the official press note.

The debut EP by Paweł Biliński (piano) and Krzysztof Maciejowski (five-string electric violin) captures the meeting of two musical worlds in a fully improvised live performance. Their dialogue balances between film music, minimalist classical influences, and free improvisation, creating soundscapes that resist easy categorization. It is music of intuition and tension, where silence is as significant as sound – an open story that evokes images and emotions in the listener’s imagination.

Each of the four tracks is a musical impression inspired by the inner worlds and creative visions of great historical figures – Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and Antoni Gaudí. Rather than depicting their works, the artists immerse themselves in the aura of their imagination. “Van Gogh’s Impression” vibrates with color and emotional energy, “Da Vinci’s Mind” unfolds like a precise sketch in motion, “Saint-Exupéry’s Dream” takes flight in a poetic reverie, and the brief “Gaudi’s Eyes” resembles an architectural miniature built from sound itself.

The album was recorded live in a home studio in an old tenement house in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, where the natural acoustics and atmosphere of the space became part of the performance. It’s music without repetition – born from gestures, glances, and mutual trust – from the tension between two individual voices. Despite its intimacy, the recording gains remarkable depth and dimension thanks to the mix and mastering by Tadeusz Mieczkowski, especially in the Dolby Atmos / Binaural versions available on compatible streaming platforms.

This record is less a „project” and more a meeting of imaginations – an attempt to capture the fleeting moment when music becomes the language of images. In an age of digital perfection, Biliński and Maciejowski return to spontaneity and the art of listening to one another. Their improvisations unfold like a conversation where sound paints what words cannot express.

The EP heralds a longplay album planned for release in 2026. Album will be available on all streaming platforms and in CD format at Bandcamp – PRE-order is available now.
